The JVERI Diamond Guide

Everything You Need to Know Before Choosing a Diamond

A diamond is more than its carat weight. Its beauty comes from the way it is cut, the way it reflects light, its color, clarity, proportions, and ultimately how it looks to your eye. At JVERI, we believe choosing a diamond should feel exciting—not complicated.

01

What Makes a Diamond Exceptional?

Beauty is in the Details

A truly exceptional diamond is defined by four key characteristics: Cut, Color, Clarity, and Carat Weight. Together, these elements determine a diamond's brilliance, fire, and overall beauty. Understanding each factor empowers you to choose a diamond that speaks to you.

CUT

COLOR

CLARITY

CARAT WEIGHT

JVERI Tip

While all four Cs matter, Cut has the greatest impact on a diamond's sparkle. A well-cut diamond will appear more brilliant than a poorly cut diamond of the same carat weight.

02 — CUT

The Art of Light

Cut is the most important factor in a diamond's beauty. It refers to how well a diamond's facets interact with light. A diamond's proportions, symmetry, and polish determine how brilliantly it sparkles. The better the cut, the more light is reflected back to your eye, creating that mesmerizing fire and brilliance.

Proportions

The angles and dimensions of a diamond determine how light travels through it. Ideal proportions maximize brilliance.

Symmetry

Precise alignment of facets ensures uniform light reflection, creating balanced sparkle across the diamond.

Polish

A smooth surface finish allows light to pass through without obstruction, enhancing overall brilliance.

JVERI Tip

Always prioritize cut quality. An Excellent or Ideal cut grade will make your diamond appear larger and more brilliant than a lower-grade cut of the same carat weight.

03 — COLOR

From Colorless to Warmer Tones

Diamond color is graded on a scale from D (colorless) to Z (light yellow or brown). The less color a diamond has, the more rare and valuable it is. However, many warmer tones can be equally beautiful and offer excellent value.

D-F
Colorless
G-J
Near Colorless
K-M
Faint
N-Z
Very Light to Light

JVERI Tip

For the best value, consider G-H color grades. These diamonds appear colorless to the naked eye but cost significantly less than D-F grades.

04 — CLARITY

The Story Within the Stone

Clarity refers to the presence of internal characteristics (inclusions) and external blemishes. Most inclusions are microscopic and don't affect a diamond's beauty to the naked eye. Clarity is graded from Flawless (FL) to Included (I3).

FL

Flawless: No inclusions or blemishes visible under 10x magnification.

IF

Internally Flawless: No inclusions, only minor surface blemishes under 10x magnification.

VVS1/VVS2

Very Very Slightly Included: Minute inclusions extremely difficult to see under 10x magnification.

VS1/VS2

Very Slightly Included: Minor inclusions difficult to see under 10x magnification.

SI1/SI2

Slightly Included: Noticeable inclusions under 10x magnification, may be visible to the naked eye.

I1/I2/I3

Included: Obvious inclusions visible to the naked eye that may affect transparency and brilliance.

JVERI Tip

VS1-VS2 clarity grades offer excellent value. These diamonds appear clean to the naked eye while costing significantly less than VVS or FL grades.

05 — CARAT

Carat Is Weight Not Beauty

Carat refers to a diamond's weight, not its size. One carat equals 200 milligrams. While carat weight affects price, it doesn't determine beauty. A smaller, well-cut diamond can appear more brilliant than a larger, poorly cut stone.

0.25ct
0.50ct
0.75ct
1.00ct
1.50ct
2.00ct+

JVERI Tip

Consider diamonds just below popular carat weights (0.90ct instead of 1.00ct). They look nearly identical but cost significantly less due to lower demand.

07 — ORIGIN

Two Origins. One Important Decision.

Both natural and lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds. The difference lies in their origin story.

Natural Diamonds Lab-Grown Diamonds
Origin Formed deep within the Earth over billions of years Created in a controlled laboratory environment in weeks
Formation Extreme heat and pressure beneath the Earth's surface Advanced technology replicates natural conditions
Characteristics Identical physical, chemical, and optical properties Identical physical, chemical, and optical properties
Availability Rare and finite resource Readily available and sustainable
Chosen for Rarity, tradition, and natural origin Value, sustainability, and ethical sourcing

At JVERI, we offer both options. Your choice depends on what matters most to you.

09 — HOW TO CHOOSE

A Simple JVERI Approach

1

Define Your Purpose

Are you choosing an engagement ring, a gift, or an investment piece? Your purpose will guide every other decision.

2

Choose Your Shape

Select a shape that resonates with your personal style. This is the most visible aspect of your diamond.

3

Establish Your Budget

Set a realistic budget early. This helps you balance the 4Cs and make informed trade-offs.

4

Balance the 4Cs

Prioritize what matters most to you. For maximum brilliance, focus on cut. For size, consider carat weight.

5

Check the Certification

Always verify that your diamond comes with a certificate from a reputable laboratory like IGI or GIA.

6

Look at the Actual Diamond

Numbers on paper don't tell the whole story. See the diamond in person or request high-quality images and videos.

EXPERT TIP

Don't buy a certificate. Buy the diamond behind the certificate.

10 — CARE

Keep Your Diamond Brilliant for Years to Come

EVERYDAY CARE

Remove your diamond jewelry before activities that could expose it to harsh chemicals or physical impact. Avoid wearing during exercise, cleaning, or swimming.

CLEANING

Clean your diamond regularly with warm water, mild soap, and a soft brush. Rinse thoroughly and dry with a lint-free cloth to maintain its brilliance.

STORAGE

Store each piece separately in a soft pouch or lined jewelry box to prevent scratching. Diamonds can scratch other gemstones and even other diamonds.

PROFESSIONAL INSPECTION

Have your diamond jewelry professionally inspected and cleaned at least once a year. This ensures settings remain secure and your piece stays in optimal condition.

INSURANCE AND DOCUMENTATION

Keep all certificates and appraisals in a safe place. Consider insuring valuable pieces and update appraisals every few years to reflect current market value.

11 — FAQ

Your Questions, Answered

Carat weight depends on your budget, style preference, and finger size. A 1-carat diamond is a popular choice, but consider the overall appearance and quality. Sometimes a slightly smaller diamond with better cut and clarity will look more impressive than a larger stone with lower grades.

Cut is the most important factor for brilliance. An excellent cut maximizes light return, creating exceptional sparkle and fire. Even a diamond with perfect color and clarity will appear dull if poorly cut. Always prioritize cut quality for maximum visual impact.

VVS (Very Very Slightly Included) means inclusions are extremely difficult to see even under 10x magnification. VVS1 and VVS2 diamonds are exceptionally clean and represent excellent quality, though the difference is invisible to the naked eye.

Yes, VS (Very Slightly Included) clarity is excellent for most buyers. VS1 and VS2 diamonds appear eye-clean, meaning inclusions are invisible without magnification. This grade offers outstanding value, allowing you to allocate more budget to carat weight or cut quality.

SI (Slightly Included) can be a smart choice if you select carefully. Many SI1 diamonds are eye-clean, especially in smaller carat weights. SI2 requires more scrutiny, but can offer significant value. Always view the specific diamond to ensure inclusions don't affect beauty or durability.

Certification from reputable labs like GIA or IGI provides an unbiased assessment of your diamond's characteristics. It ensures you're getting what you pay for and serves as documentation for insurance. Always insist on certified diamonds for transparency and peace of mind.

Natural diamonds form over billions of years deep in the Earth, while lab-grown diamonds are created in weeks using advanced technology. Both have identical physical, chemical, and optical properties. The main differences are origin, rarity, and price—lab-grown diamonds typically cost 30-40% less.

Yes, lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds. They have the same crystal structure, hardness, brilliance, and fire as natural diamonds. The only difference is their origin. Even gemologists need specialized equipment to distinguish between natural and lab-grown diamonds.

Different shapes create different visual effects. Round brilliants maximize sparkle, while elongated shapes like oval and marquise make fingers appear longer and can look larger per carat. Fancy shapes also reflect personal style—emerald cuts offer elegance, while cushions provide vintage charm.

Round brilliant is the most popular shape, accounting for about 75% of diamonds sold. Its 58 facets are specifically designed to maximize brilliance and fire. However, fancy shapes like oval, cushion, and emerald are increasingly popular for their unique character and often better value per carat.

For most buyers, clarity is more important than color in the higher grades. A VS2 clarity with H color will appear more beautiful than a VVS1 with K color. However, in lower clarity grades, color becomes more noticeable. Balance both based on your priorities and setting choice.

Certificates provide grades within ranges, so two VS2 diamonds may have different inclusion patterns. Cut quality variations within the same grade also affect appearance. Fluorescence, proportions, and even the specific location of inclusions impact how a diamond looks. This is why viewing the actual stone is crucial.
